Get your 2025-26 tax return figures, box by box
Answer some plain-English questions. You'll get the exact figures to type into the HMRC online return, an estimate of what you owe or get back, and a check of what you might be missing out on claiming.
Tax year 6 April 2025 to 5 April 2026. Online deadline: 31 January 2027. File online by 30 December 2026 and, if you owe under £3,000, HMRC can collect it through your tax code.
Made for you if you're...
- employed (PAYE) with a P60, and
- you rent out a property, alone or jointly, and/or
- you have a small side business or do self-employed work (turnover under £90,000)
Have these to hand
- your P60 (and P11D if you get benefits)
- rent received and letting costs
- side-business takings and costs
- bank interest, dividend, pension and Gift Aid totals
- last year's return, if you filed one
About you
Your job
Copy these from your P60. If you changed jobs during the year, use the P45 from your old job as well.
Expenses for your job
These reduce the tax on your pay. Only include costs your employer didn't pay you back for.
If you wash, repair or replace a uniform or protective clothing, or tools, you can claim a fixed amount for your industry without receipts.
Business mileage in your own vehicle
Journeys for work, not your normal commute. HMRC rates for 2025-26: 45p a mile for the first 10,000 miles in a car or van, then 25p. Motorbikes 24p, bicycles 20p.
Other job expenses (travel, subscriptions, working from home)
Train fares, parking, hotels and meals on work trips you paid for yourself.
Only bodies on HMRC's approved list (for example NMC, HCPC, many trade bodies) that are relevant to your job.
£6 a week, but only if your employer has no office for you or your job requires it. Choosing to work from home doesn't count.
Rental property
Usually 50% for a married couple, unless you've told HMRC otherwise on form 17.
For the whole property. We'll work out your share.
Letting costs for the year (whole property)
Leave them blank if you'd rather just use the £1,000 allowance. We'll compare both and use whichever saves more.
On a residential let this isn't deducted from the rent. You get a 20% tax reduction instead.
Losses or unused interest from last year
Look at your 2024-25 return: UK property page box 43 (losses carried forward) and the unused finance costs.
Self-employment or side business
For one business with turnover under £90,000, which uses the short pages. Use the year to 5 April 2026 (or 31 March 2026).
Using your own car? You can claim 45p a mile (first 10,000 miles) instead of actual running costs. Include it in car, van and travel.
Equipment, CIS, losses and National Insurance
Claimed as Annual Investment Allowance. Don't also include it in costs above. Cars are treated differently.
Savings, pensions and giving
Savings interest and dividends
Use what was paid to you between 6 April 2025 and 5 April 2026. Your bank's annual interest statement or app shows it. Leave out ISAs and Premium Bonds. For a joint account, enter half the interest.
Nearly all UK interest is now paid without tax taken off.
The amount you received
Dividend distributions, not interest distributions
Pension payments and Gift Aid
What actually left your account. Your provider added 20% on top, and we add that back. Include SIPPs, stakeholder pensions and workplace schemes like NEST if they're relief at source. Don't include workplace pension taken from your pay before tax: you already got full relief on that.
What you gave, where you ticked the Gift Aid box. Don't include payroll giving.
A few last things
For 2025-26: £26.05 a week for the eldest child and £17.25 for each other child. One child for the whole year is £1,354.60.
Only if HMRC asked you to pay in advance (31 January 2026 and 31 July 2026). Otherwise leave it blank.
Not included in this version: student loans, capital gains, foreign income, State and private pensions you receive, Rent a Room and partnerships. If any of these apply to you, the estimate won't be complete.
